Overnight from yesterday till this morning was a bloody period as the Nigerian Police and Army faced Boko Haram militants in a shootout in the beleaguered township of Damaturu. It was an explosive period in the area.

Unfortunately, two senior police officers and 13 others were killed in the attacks that started yesterday. Yet unconfirmed reports also disclosed that 10 soldiers were also killed by the Islamist militants. Among the casualties on the police side were Ibrahim Abubakar, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, and the squadron commander of the mobile police unit 41 a superintendent of police (SP) whose name was simply given as Kabir. Both men died at the hands of the militants.
